That’s a lot of numbers, but it’s essential context to explain why I’ve kept up into the early hours pondering not why Metroid Prime 4 exists, but more the rationale behind Nintendo putting quite so much effort into getting Metroid Prime 4 right. Metroid Prime, based on publicly available numbers, was outsold by New Super Luigi U, on the Wii U. Metroid Prime, with a score of 97, sits among a handful of titles as the joint second-best Metacritic for a Nintendo published title. Heck, looking at an approximate average for the Metroid franchise you land at around 1.3 million per entry (which, admittedly, is dragged down by Federation Force and Other M, but we’ll loop back on those later), which means that even world-renowned commercial failure ARMS, if you go by what Twitter says at least, sold better than your average Samus sojourn – the Switch’s much maligned arena brawler has, to date, shifted at least 2.3 million units. Or indeed Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Kirby, Animal Crossing or Splatoon numbers. Not because DKCR is a bad game (far from it, I’m a big fan of Retro’s take on the ape), but more because it helps to really align one’s vision to the reality that Metroid games don’t sell Mario or Zelda numbers. Throw in the 3DS port of DKCR that piggybacked off Retro’s work and that adds a couple of million to that number. If you’re really into Metroid, then you probably already know this little curious fact that I like to spring at parties: Based on publicly available data, Donkey Kong Country Returns, on the Wii alone, outsold Retro’s entire suite of Metroid Prime titles, individual releases and the collected trilogy, by about 500,000 units. Well, things start to become clear if you dig a bit. Why, given the series’ plentitude of plaudits, are entries so rare? I’m going to cut the history lesson short though, as this is Shinesparkers – if you’re here then chances are you know Metroid’s potted release history and, if you’re like me, it’s likely something that keeps you up at night. roster? Not that it mattered much as Metroid Prime returned on the GameCube, after a somewhat fraught development, to utterly rapturous applause! If it was so important, why did it duck a console, save for Samus springing up to add a sprinkling of female representation to the Super Smash Bros. It always seemed strange to me, then, that Metroid skipped the Nintendo 64 entirely. If you were into videogames then these were the games to get a Nintendo system for, allegedly. Zelda, Mario and Metroid were the three franchises held up as the torchbearers for the Japanese gaming giant, the trio that made them what they are. When I was growing up there was a consensus among Nintendo fans that Metroid was part of this adored ‘Triforce’ of titles from the Big N.

Īs of 2020 the only true orbital bombardment in history has been executed for scientific purposes. Some of the proposed systems rely on large tungsten carbide/ uranium cermet rods dropped from orbit and depend on kinetic energy, rather than explosives, but their mass makes them prohibitively difficult to transport to orbit. Orbital bombardment systems with conventional warheads are permitted under the terms of SALT II. The fractional orbital bombardment system was phased out in January 1983 in compliance with the SALT II treaty of 1979, which, among other things, prohibited the deployment of systems capable of placing weapons of mass destruction in such a partial orbit. While the Soviets deployed a working version of the system, they were forbidden by the Outer Space Treaty to place live warheads in space. Using this system, a nuclear warhead could be placed in low Earth orbit, and later de-orbited to hit any location on the Earth's surface. It has been proposed as a means of attack for several weapons systems concepts, including kinetic bombardment and as a nuclear delivery system.ĭuring the Cold War, the Soviet Union deployed a Fractional Orbital Bombardment System from 1968 to 1983. Orbital bombardment is the act of attacking targets on a planet, moon or other astronomical object from orbit around the object, rather than from an aircraft, or a platform beyond orbit. As other weapons exist, notably those using kinetic bombardment, that would not violate these treaties, some private groups and government officials have proposed a Space Preservation Treaty which would ban the placement of any weaponry in outer space. These agreements prohibit weapons of mass destruction from being placed in space. ĭevelopment of orbital weaponry was largely halted after the entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty and the SALT II treaty. During World War II Nazi Germany was also developing plans for an orbital weapon called the Sun gun, an orbital mirror that would have been used to focus and weaponize beams of sunlight. Several orbital weaponry systems were designed by the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. As of December 2022, there are no known operative orbital weapons systems, but several nations have deployed orbital surveillance networks to observe other nations or armed forces. Orbital weaponry is any weapon that is in orbit around a large body such as a planet or moon. The tests took place at Edwards Air Force Base. Although no real hardware was ever manufactured for deployment, the military did test the use of lasers mounted on Boeing 747s to destroy missiles in the 2000s, however these were discontinued due to practical limitations of keeping a constant fleet airborne near potential launch sites due to the lasers range limitations keeping a small number from being sufficient. When a missile launch was detected, the satellite would fire at the missile (or warheads) and destroy it. Other aspects included satellites in orbit carrying powerful laser weapons, plasma weapons, or particle beams. Some concepts of the system included Brilliant Pebbles, which were Kinetic Kill Vehicles, essentially small rockets launched from satellites toward their targets (a warhead, warhead bus, or even an upper stage of an ICBM). The defensive system was nicknamed Star Wars, after the movie, by its detractors. On March 23, 1983, President Ronald Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative, a research program with a goal of developing a defensive system which would destroy enemy ICBMs. Main article: Strategic Defense Initiative The Soviet uncrewed Polyus weapons platform was designed to be equipped with a megawatt carbon-dioxide laser and a self-defense cannon. This was the first and so far the only weapon to be fired in space. The Soviet Almaz secret military space station program was equipped with a fixed 23mm autocannon to prevent hostile interception or boarding by hostile forces. Space weapons are also a central theme in military science fiction and sci-fi video games. In the course of the militarisation of space, such weapons were developed mainly by the contesting superpowers during the Cold War, and some remain under development today. anti-satellite weapons), attack targets on the earth from space or disable missiles travelling through space. Shadowkeep and future releases are considered standalone releases, not requiring players to own previous premium content. The release of the next expansion, Shadowkeep (October 2019) began Year Three. A third, large expansion, Forsaken, began Year Two with an overhaul on gameplay. Year One of Destiny 2 featured two small expansions, Curse of Osiris and Warmind. Like the original Destiny, the game features expansion packs which further the story and adds new content across the game. Players assume the role of a Guardian, protectors of Earth's last safe city as they wield a power called Light to protect humanity from different alien races and combat the looming threat of the Darkness. PvP features objective-based modes, as well as traditional deathmatch game modes. These activities have an emphasis on exploration of the destinations and interactions with non-player characters (NPCs) the original Destiny only featured NPCs in social spaces. A free roam patrol mode is also available for each destination which feature public events as well as activities not available in the original. In addition to normal story missions, PvE features three-player " strikes" and dungeons and six-player raids. Like the original, activities in Destiny 2 are divided among player versus environment (PvE) and player versus player (PvP) game types. Set in a " mythic science fiction" world, the game features a multiplayer "shared-world" environment with elements of role-playing games. It is the sequel to 2014's Destiny and its subsequent expansions. The game was published by Activision until December 31, 2018, when Bungie acquired the publishing rights to the franchise. It became free-to-play, utilizing the games as a service model, under the New Light title on October 1, 2019, followed by the game's release on Stadia the following month, and then PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms in December 2020. It was originally released as a pay to play game in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. Destiny 2 is a free-to-play online first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie.
